I believe that helping you connect with your authentic voice is a way to help you connect with your soul, and as such, it is sacred work. I have been grappling with the question of what spiritual leadership means for most of my life, and so I do not take this name for myself lightly. I grew up as the child of a pastor and started longing for spiritual connection and insight at a very young age. Always curious, I studied the history and teachings of many different religions both in college and in graduate school. My personal spiritual journey led me out of Christianity and also out of organized religion. I am decidedly anti-hierarchical. I believe that no person or institution can hold spiritual authority over another. I have authority only over my own experience, and I respect that you have complete authority over yours. I am here to share the ways that I have learned to reconnect with my voice, my soul, trusting that you will receive it if, and only if, it is helpful for you. I believe that I am ready to call myself a Priestess at this time in my life because I know, deep down, that I want to see your brilliance as surely as I want to see my own, and I want to celebrate your brilliance as surely as I want to celebrate my own.
I value, above all, kindness, creativity, and curiosity. The spiritual practices I teach are open-ended, prompting you to ask questions to your deepest self with no expectation for what the answers will be. Personally, I feel that our souls live many lifetimes, that there is mystery in this world beyond our comprehension, and that help is available to us in mysterious ways. I celebrate embodiment, and I believe that we can follow our body’s deepest pleasures towards spiritual awakening.
No. You do not have to know how to sing, read music, or play an instrument in order to work with me. Beginner’s mind is a wonderful thing! Experienced musicians may find that they actually have some unlearning to do.
“Tone deaf” is a misnomer. You are not deaf. If you do not speak in complete monotone, like an early robot, then you can hear tone, or pitch. Matching pitch is a skill that we all must learn, and some of us learn it sooner than others. Often, being afraid that we can’t learn a thing will prevent us from working at it. If you haven’t yet learned how to match pitch, there is no better time to start. I offer my clients simple, slow exercises that will help them learn to match pitch, with no previous ability required. Most importantly, you will learn to make music that is satisfying for you and others to hear because it is in tune with itself, and with your own body.
No. I offer exercises that you can do in complete private while you find your voice. I will not be listening in, or evaluating your voice at any time. You will be learning to sense what you like about your own voice, and to value your own sense of your voice, so anyone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter, at all. You will, however, naturally gain confidence to share your voice how and when you want to over the course of your time working with me. Sometimes we are our own toughest critic, and it is your inner critic that is going to learn to step aside, first and foremost. As you learn to give yourself a kind ear and to recognize where beauty actually comes from, you will start to sense what a gift you are giving when you sing for others, and your confidence will build. You can, however, receive the full benefit of this work while only singing for yourself, if you choose!
